Workshop

Researchers from minoritised backgrounds remain underrepresented at senior and professorial levels in academia, with Black researchers particularly underrepresented across the UK research community. Structural barriers to accessing funding and navigating research opportunities continue to limit participation, reducing the diversity of voices shaping the future of research. Securing grant funding is a critical component of building research capacity and progressing academic careers; however, for many researchers from minoritised backgrounds, obtaining and managing grants remains challenging.
Minoritised communities have expressed a preference for research led by researchers from within their own communities, citing trust, cultural understanding, and accountability. This underscores the need to strengthen capacity for researcher-led grant development. In response, funders including the Wellcome Trust and the Nuffield Foundation have introduced targeted schemes to support Black researchers and others from minoritised backgrounds. Despite these initiatives, many applicants lack access to practical skills, guidance, mentorship, and networks needed to identify funding.
This session will be delivered by two ECRs of African heritage: Dr Sophia Amenyah (Northumbria University) and Dr Hibbah Osei-Kwasi (Loughborough University). Both are award-winning researchers who have secured funding from prestigious national and international funders, including the Wellcome Trust, NIHR, Vivensa Foundation, AXA, UKRI (MRC/BBSRC), and Alzheimer’s Research UK. Their portfolios include research grants, fellowships, knowledge exchange awards, and collaborative event grants.
The session combines lived experience with practical strategies for securing research and knowledge exchange funding. Interactive activities will support participants to align research priorities with funder agendas and develop strategies for sustainable collaborative networks.
