Professionals in the science field are faced with the decision to take a career break as some point in their career for various reasons with the most common being related to family caring responsibilities that sometimes extend longer than expected. Change in personal circumstances are also another reason for career breaks in the science field.
Science is ever evolving and taking a career break could have impact on your career progression which may be difficult to rectify without the right support on returning to work, not entertaining imposter syndrome and having a network to bring you up to speed with developments in the field.
This session will explore the different reasons for career breaks and what to consider when returning to work to successfully continue and advance in your chosen science field.
This session will be led by Dr Boatemaa Ofori-Frimpong, a Lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and a researcher with an interest in Diabetes and related complications who had a career break that lasted three years and three months due to family circumstances and returned to work to contribute to Bioscience Teaching and Learning at GCU. Boatemaa’s lived experience of career break in the science field has inspired this session.
