Workshop

Success in the life sciences is shaped not only by technical skills and achievements but also by how individuals present, communicate, and strategically develop their careers. For minoritised scientists, establishing visibility and influence can be particularly challenging due to systemic barriers, unconscious bias, and limited access to informal networks. Building and shaping a career identity equips delegates to define their strengths, articulate their value, and navigate opportunities with confidence.

This roundtable offers a collaborative space for participants to explore what it means to be their own ambassador. Through structured discussion and interactive exercises, attendees will reflect on their skills, experiences, and achievements, and consider strategies to communicate their professional presence effectively across academic, industry, NHS, and community settings. The session highlights the importance of adaptability, recognising that a career identity evolves with roles, sectors, and personal ambitions.

Facilitators will guide participants in sharing insights, learning from peer experiences, and synthesising collective strategies to navigate challenges and leverage opportunities. Emphasis will be placed on approaches particularly relevant to minoritised scientists, including building visibility, developing networks, and asserting value in environments where underrepresentation may limit recognition.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to actively shape, communicate, and evolve their career identity, alongside practical strategies to enhance visibility, influence, and impact throughout their professional journey.
