The Diamond Lab at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) at the University of California, Berkeley is inviting applications for a postdoctoral scholar position within its interdisciplinary research environment. The position is embedded in the Berkeley Initiative for Optimized Microbiome Editing (BIOME) and focuses on advancing systems-level understanding of microbiome function.

The successful candidate will apply genome-resolved multi-omic approaches, statistical and metabolic modeling, and machine learning methods to investigate microbial community dynamics. Research areas may include microbe–microbe interactions, plasmids and phages, metabolic functional guild analysis, microbiome stability modeling, and the use of artificial intelligence to predict emergent microbial behaviors. Projects may also examine bovine rumen microbiomes and other complex microbial systems.

The position is supported by a long-term, fully funded research program and provides access to IGI’s extensive sequencing capabilities and in-house computational infrastructure. The role offers significant independence in project design within a collaborative environment at the interface of microbiology, genomics, and computational biology, with relevance to both human health and climate change.

Applications will be reviewed beginning January 30, 2026, and will be accepted until February 28, 2026, if the position remains open. Applicants are encouraged to apply by January 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM (PST) to ensure full consideration.
